About Us

We (Matt Garner and Kelly Grant) have proudly owned the Bunkhouse since 2014, and are thrilled to offer a remote retreat with easy access to miles of trails and boundless forests. Our home is also on the property, where we live with our daughter Laurel who joined us in September of '21, our friend Calub, and of course our dogs, horses and cats.

Matt has many passions, such as blacksmithing, playing frisbee golf, hiking with the dogs, cross country skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, camping… to list a few. He has been a home-care provider for 16years and has called Vermont home for twenty+ years. Kelly, a native Vermonter, has many years of experience working on ranches and farms in Wyoming, Montana, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Vermont. With a passion for starting young horses and helping the horse/human relationship be one of understanding, respect and safety, she would be happy to assist you with any horse training help you might need.

The Bunkhouse will surely delight anyone looking to get away for a mix of relaxation and adventure. Located outside of Barre, Vermont, we are five miles up a well-maintained Vermont gravel road from the quiet village of Washington, Vermont.  Then we’re one-third of a mile up our driveway through the pines, where you’ll then break into open pasture and see the pond, the Bunkhouse, and our home.

The Bunkhouse is located in a sparsely populated, mountainous area of Central Vermont.  Except for far northeastern Vermont or northern Maine, it doesn't get much more remote than this. This is one of the largest remaining tracts of land in the state with the least number of traveled public roads.  This empty land is crisscrossed by endless miles of unmaintained Class 4 town roads and old logging trails, which are perfectly useable for horseback riding, hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. These roads and lands consist of thousands of acres of uninhabited Vermont forest land, all accessible from the Bunkhouse.
